However, in 2003 he started to paint sporadically in response to specific requests. In 2007 he
started to paint in earnest and he’s preparing a full scale painting exposition for 2009.

Although he does some abstract paintings, his heart is definitely in realism - romantic
landscaping. He studied  the styles of old masters. It’s a more demanding style but the results
are also more satisfying. And this is the reason he chose oil as his painting medium. Only the
oil can give him the effect of depth and luminance that he’s looking for. He also wants to
integrate light, as it would appear standing in front of that particular scenery. He’s
particularly fascinated by what the contrast of colours should be under different time of the
day, and different climatic conditions. And that becomes a challenge in itself.

Mr. Conrad uses different brush strokes to create contrast and depth.  And some of his
paintings pull the observer into the scenery of the painting. They generate an emotional
response. That is something people have commented on many of the artist’s paintings: “Yes, I
would very much like to go there.”

A feeling of peace, serenity pours out of many of the artist’s paintings. As if “in there”, the
world is a much better place.

Besides painting in oil, Mr. Conrad is also doing digital art. Most of his abstract works are
done digitally these days, which gives him much more freedom to play around with colour.
Digital art is also very forgiving.

Another passion of his is photography. Although his schedule is mostly devoted to painting,
whenever he gets a chance, he goes out to take some pictures. His photography also helps him
with his painting.
A self-taught artist in his forties, Christopher John
Conrad has a strong desire to achieve excellence. We
can see it by looking at the quality of his paintings
through time. A man of immense artistic talent and
multiple abilities, yet, he’s usually reserved when you
first meet him and absolutely charming when you get
to know him.

C.J. Conrad was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He has
been drawing since he was very young and started
painting with watercolour at the age of six. He
wanted to go to art school to further develop his
skills but was denied the opportunity because his
family did not believe anybody could make a living as
an artist. So he had to put aside his dream and finish
his education in commerce. During the 80s he moved
to New York to help his brother with his business and
in the mid 90s he immigrated to Montreal, Canada.
